Transactional Analysis offers a system of psychotherapy that is used in the treatment of all types of psychological disorders, from everyday living problems to severe psychosis. Transactional Analysis can be used in any field where there is a need for understanding of individuals, relationships and communication. It is a powerful tool in management and communications training and in organizational analysis. It is used by social workers, police and probation authorities, and ministers of religion. It is used in educational settings to help teachers and students to stay in clear communication and avoid setting up unproductive confrontations. Transactional Analysis, as defined by the International Transactional Analysis Association, is a theory of personality and systematic psychotherapy for personal growth and change. Transactional Analysis has a wide variety of applications including: *A theory of personalitywhich gives a picture of how people are structured psychologically. This is known as the ego-state model that is a three-part model to help people understand how they function and how they express their personality in terms of behavior. *A theory of communication that can be extended to give a method of analyzing systems and organizations. *A theory of child development that explains how present life patterns originated in childhood. Within that framework, Transactional Analysis helps individuals understand how they may continue to re-play childhood strategies in grown-up life, even when these strategies produce results that are self-defeating or painful. (Hence, the theory of psychopathology.) To reach our full potential as grown-ups, we need to update the strategies for dealing with life which we decided upon as infants. When we find that these strategies are no longer working for us, we need to replace them with new ones which do work. |
Transactional Analysis rests upon certain philosophical assumptions. The most fundamental assumption is that people have worth, value and dignity as individuals. It involves accepting self and others just as we are. At times we may not like nor accept what others do, but always we accept what we are. An individual’s essence as a human being is OK even though their behavior may not be. No one is one-up on another. We are on a level as people. This is true even though our accomplishments may differ and even though we may be of different race, age or religion. |
